Re: [Avid-L2] File naming

I get lost in trying to remember which OS and what versions handle long file names. But that isn't important, since I try to keep file names fairly short - less than 10 or 12 characters. I do try to keep tape name s to 6 or 8 characters if I can.

Don't use the filename as a shot description, no matter what system you are on. Use metadata. Use comment columns in bins. Keep an external Filemaker database. Anything other than the filename.

FYI, "media files" in Avid are not files that you name. Media files are created by the appliation. The files you name in Avid are Master Clips.

What is the general rule to naming your media files when you capture/ transfer / transcode?
How many characters is  good. I know from picking up most editing books they suggest 6 or 7 letters. Could you run into anny issues with say a filename that is around 40 to fifty long in Avid, FCP or any other environment?
