Re: [Avid-L2] Suggestions for cutting a doc in a foreign language

I've cut two 59-minute documentaries, and a reality series in Maori.

I tended to get approximate translations on paper with basic timecoding. I
found that I could fairly easily start to detect editpoints from intonation
and flow after a few hours with the footage. In all these cases I've been
mostly cutting alone based on a broad paper edit and approximate
translations.

I've done roughly the same thing with German too.

The only real limitation I've found in this sort of work is the inability to
make the frankenbite sound-edits I might do in English.

Also in Maori people, especially elders, tend to pause a lot during speech
which can make it difficult to figure out when thought threads begin and
end, although again I tended to become familiar with these patterns after a
while with the footage. However those pauses during speech are often a
valuable part of the speech, and tightening wasn't always appropriate or
possible. Not sure if the same is true of Chinese.
