Well, I had initially tried the obvious fixes:
1. Deleted user MCState
2. Deleted msmMMOB.mdb files
3. Created new user and opened project in that user
In an act of desperation -- I did that all over again -- and the problem seems to have now disappeared.
Hopefully, it will stay that way.
