The full and complete story is that yes, Spielberg and Kahn do work on the Steenbeck. But they also always have Avid rooms parallel to them that are reproducing their work and keeping the project organized for all the subsidiary work that must necessarily go on on movies of this kind of complexity. But the actual cutting, the offline creative cutting happens on film.
I think the real takeaway is that if you're worth an estimated 3.0 billion dollars, you can pretty much cut any way you want.
