Subject: [Avid-L2] Re: Sony PDW-U1
I'll clarify what I mean by digitize. Sony has created an "XDCAM TRANSFER" program that allows you to "copy" files off of the disc. It's essentially a "stand alone" app that can "see" more than a single source at a time. So, if you have several PDW's hooked up to the same computer, this program will see them and allow you to pull off media from several discs simultaneously. At this point, this is a "file copy" not a transcode. If you use the classic "off-line to on-line workflow" in FCP, you will need to create specialized "low rez" proxies. For that you'd use Compressor and distributed rendering to transcode the files. For this to be efficient a SAN is essential.
With enough hardware in the mix you can easily achieve faster than realtime ingest, even with multiple steps along the way. (Copy, transcode, move)
Hope that helps.

Theoretically, you can triple the fun, but you reach a point of diminishing returns as the USB bus gets saturated. Two drives work great though.
