I don't think you can go with an iMac if you have your eye on Resolve or Smoke. You need lots of slots for PCI cards.

Personally I have both PCs and Macs (3 PCs, 5 Macs) and prefer the Macs mostly because I don't have the IT chops to keep up with the PCs beyond the absolute basics.

Apple Color looks dead as a doornail, so Resolve is definitely a choice - and Mac only at that, realistically.

Avid works fine on a Mac, though I do think it runs better on PCs, but no hard evidence, just gut feeling on that.
