[Avid-L2] Spielberg Takes a Walk

Reportage from the front...

Last night I was at the DGA here in LA to see a discussion as part of the Guild's 75th Anniversary events. On stage was Spielberg, Cameron, JJ Abrams, and Michael Apted (serving as moderator). Ostensibly there to honor Spielberg's role as an industry "game changer", the chat was free-ranging and peppered with great anecdotes (Not one single word about 3D the entire evening. And I mean not... one).

Anyway, at one point Cameron asked Spielberg if he and editor Michael Kahn still cut on film (You may remember Cameron's famous quote, "Happiness is a warm Avid."). Spielberg replied that yes, absolutely, he still cuts on film. However, the very last film he shot, "War Horse", they cut on an Avid. Spielberg said he wanted to see what it was like to work on an Avid.

Spielberg said that his problem with the Avid is that it's too fast. He said that what he loves about film was that it gives you these 30 or 45 minute walks between notes and when you have to come back to see the result of your notes, when the editor and the assistants are all hacking and chopping and taping. He said he loves to walk around the lot and think about his decisions, and really confront the results of those decisions in his head.

Spielberg said that, for him, the sense of excitement and anticipation that builds in those 30-minute walks helps him simulate the energy of seeing everything for the first time and makes him the audience again. He noted that for his next film, "Lincoln", he's pretty sure they'll be returning to cutting on film.
