Ok folks,
I am looking for some guidance here. Last year I moved to Avid at the office and could not be happier with it. Does what I need the way I want to do it. At work the projects are all PSA, Conference, Corporate type stuff. However, I am now in need of a home computer and I want to cut and color on it.
I have never been an Apple fan. And that is putting it in as mild a term as I can muster. I think they make nice products, and own several, but I have MANY issues with the company and how they do business. However, I will buy a Mac if that is the best path for me.
I am looking to cut some more indie films, and do some basic commercial work out of the house. This is a hobby for me and not a business. While I do expect to run Avid at home, I'm been looking a bit longingly at some of the programs available on the Mac platform that are currently unavailable on the PC. Notably, software DaVinci and some of the excellent control surfaces.
So here is my question to the group. Particularly those of you who cut on both platforms. Would you build up a reasonable PC, or go with an iMac? I would go with the 27" iMac and would likely not do a MacPro as I just don't want to spend the money. And I would do the i5 based iMac 27". The i7 based unit is simply too costly.
So what say you? And I'd like to hear pros and cons for each platform. I have NO interest in starting a platform war. Each of these platforms has merits to me. And honestly I am probably leaning toward getting an iMac unless someone has a VERY compelling reason I shouldn't go that way. Again, the MacPro is off the table, so please don't suggest it. If I am going to go with a tower, I'll stay with a PC.
Thanks for your professional thoughts.
