They have had the separate Symphony model since the late 90s when they created the Symphony. If the user base hasn't left yet because of that, why would they suddenly do that now?

<<And then you have all-in-one FCPX and CS5 wooing the disgruntled MC masses with "we can do what a Symphony can at a fraction of the price, and we're much, much cooler...">>

That isn't going anywhere. If you expect Avid to compete with free software like Lightworks, then you are going to be disappointed. They can't run a business without any income. Only the government can do that.

<<If Avid follows through with this "threat" to continue with Symphony development (there is historical evidence not to believe them in announcements like this) I think it will continue the flow of editors away from Avid.>>

Fortunately, they don't believe this as I don't.

<<This has everything to do with Avid looking out and seeing what is happening in the real world and being pro-active to that.>>

What, giving your software away for next to nothing? As I said, they haven't figured out a business model for that yet.

<<If Avid really is listening to its user-base, MC and Symphony would be one product that would fit the needs all across the market.>>

You have polling data for that? At the event there were several folks asking for Symphony improvements. Not one said merge the two. So I could draw from that straw poll the exact opposite of what you are stating.
