[Avid-L2] FCP 6 Re-Open File Error

I am trying to open a project file created with an older version of
FCP and keep getting this error message " this project is unreadable
or may be too new for this version of Final Cut."

The media files exist, but the project files and edits are obviously
unavailable.

Is there a fix or a work around for this?
