I've done this workflow a few times, and transcoding has worked just fine, except for the time involved.
The option that I use most frequently though is using a Sony XDCam Deck. I have the PDW-F70, and I use the deck to do the down-convert to SD and just do a batch capture into a 30i Project. I assume any of the Newer XDCam Decks would allow you to do the same thing.
There are a couple of "gotchas" as far as tape names and deck templates that you have to be aware of, but nothing that complicated. There's a fair amount of posts in the Avid forums about this "Hybrid" workflow that detail it fairly well. But if you have any questions, let me know.
