I have never had Sonic DVD successfully burn a disc directly. So I always create
a disc image, then use Roxio Creator to copy that to a disc. I like having the
.iso file around for archiving.

I too have had numerous failures with Avid DVD, working on SD not HD projects.
The solution I found was to create a disc image rather than burn straight to
disc. It adds an extra step, but I haven't had a single crash using this
method.
