Two broad groups of effects. The multiplane look is essentially placing
flat sections of the image in z space, then panning a "camera" across
the comp. Besides separating the layers into flat pieces - you can also
depth map layers (in AE it's called "displacement"), which distorts the
layer in Z space based on a user drawn matte. There's a few good
tutorials on lynda.
