The hardware in Nitris DX is decoding the DNxHD codec. Also AVC-Intra with the new module. Also thin raster 1440 and 960 is scaled by the hardware to 1920 and 1280 respectively. I presume it also adds pulldown for 23.98 to 29.97 conversions.

The Io Express (and also the other cards) does none of this (except maybe the pulldown cadence). This means the CPU has to do the work in order to present the Io Express with full raster, uncompressed SD or HD video.

Depending on the horsepower of your machine, this will be the difference of several layers of real-time playback. It varies with format and effects used. On a fast machine, maybe 4 or 5 layers on the Io Express and 7+ on the Nitris DX (assuming all DNxHD) - but I'm just making a guess.
