Re: [Avid-L2] Thunderbolt

I think the tech crunch article misses the mark on a number of fronts:

1) "Apple's burned itself with Firewire, which, while still used by many professionals, is more or less a niche interface compared with USB."

I wouldn't say Apple "burned" itself by providing users with firewire and usb. The fact that all macs had firewire enabled connectivity with a whole generation of storage, dv cameras, video/audio io, etc.

2) "can't really include more than one Thunderbolt slot, and can't use that one for anything but high-speed data (due, ironically, to their early adoption). "

I don't understand what he's talking about when he says "can't use that one for anything but high-speed data". WTF else would you use a high speed bus for than "high speed data". If he's suggesting that you can only use it for storage that's foolish, as AJA, BMD, etc have already announced they will be supporting it.

3) "if USB 3.0 takes off in the meantime, and people can't really tell the difference between 5Gb/s and 10Gb/s when they're transferring a few dozen photos from their camera, or a movie from their external hard drive?"

Again, what is this guy talking about? He seems to be missing the point... when copying files from a portable HD or camera, files don't move at anywhere near 5Gbps or 10Gbps because the bus speed is not the limiting factor. It's weird that someone who writes about this technology for a living is missing this.
