In Avid, with some motion blur, you might not really need a cylinder at all, since the images fly by so quickly. Maybe you just create a "strip of icons" in Photoshop, or a strip of text in the Title Tool and then quickly slide the strip through a little "slot" window.
But, I don't think that the Avid is necessarily the right tool for this particular job. Trying to pound a nail with a screwdriver will eventually work, but a hammer is probably a better choice.
What are you trying to spin in the "cylinders?" Icons? Video? Text? That could make a difference in finding the solution.
Marquee has some pretty powerful 3D tools that might work, but I have no idea how to accomplish what you're asking for in there.
What you're trying to do sounds an awful lot like a standard LiveType effect. If you've got a copy of that, then that's probably the best solution.
