As far as DVEs go the one in DS is as 3D as they come - full XYZ depth perspective. The thing DS is missing to become a 3D compositor is camera and lights.
When you're hanging around "folks from Quantel, Autodesk, Assimilate and others", don't be surprised by them belittling the DS, this tradition goes back a long way. However, you can safely assume that most DS owners have as clear an idea of the road map for DS as you might ever have.
