[Avid-L2] Re: OT: Facilis as server in workflow

Hello Scott
I have a 24D server with 24 Terrabytes in version 4.6.4 serving up media to Avids, Premiere Pro and Smoke 2011. The config I have can offer on average 500MB/s so is as fast as a standard Promise / Xsan setup. I also oversee a 15x FCP setup with Promise and Xsan. I too am investigating leaving the apple fold for something else, maybe terrablock. Depending on your workflow, the terrablock can serve up the speeds you are used to with the xsan. The problem at the moment (I know that James at Terrablock is reading this so I hope he will not hate me for this) is that, currently, the Terrablock has mac client issues that can make the multi-user part less stable than the PCs (I run both off the Terrablock). I can assure you that Terrablock is working hard to give the macs the same stability as the PCs, but at present that is not the case.

I too am looking for an Xsan alternative but I am holding off to see who will fill the Xsan shoes. The Unity 5000 is an option but it seems to be limited to 300mB/s, which is too slow for FCP HD work for me. The Terrablock is a strong contender in the reasonably priced zone. You can look into Isilon or Rodes. These are a very hardcore solution that are very versatile, fast and similar to Xsan but I think they cost a fortune
