OK, so if anyone is interested, we just finished testing our new
Teranex Mini and this is what we found.
NTSC SD Material shot with PD (standard or advanced) upconverts nicely
to 1080p 23.98sf and removes the pulldown cleanly. Our older Teranex
mini also does an awesome job of upconverting 30i to 1080i 59.94. We
expect that. (the older one doesn't convert to 23.98 or do standards
conversion).
1080i 29.97 originated material has pretty smooth motion when
converted to 1080p 23.98sf, however, the picture is softened greatly
in sections with motion (still parts of the frame are fine-part of the
Teranex Pixel Motion interpolation) and there is a great deal of
ghosting on still frames. We compared the same shots with a
conversion on an Alchemist HD. The Alchemist is MUCH BETTER. I know,
I'm comparing an under $3k box to an over $100k box, but I had some
hope.
NTSC to PAL conversion was the same result as above. Slightly
softened frames and random blended frames on cuts. The Alchemist, of
course was clean all the way through (This was an edited show, so,
sort of expected from the cheaper box.)
I think I'll keep my old Mini and return the new one, and keep sending
material to Alchemist for frame rate conversions.
