I was not clear...
The new PMW-500 is a new XDCam camera that writes EX format files to SxS
cards. Alternatively, it will write files to those SxS cards that are in
the XDCam Disc format and file structure (with proxies, etc...) Why would
you want to do this? It's the only way to get the 4:2:2 files.

The file structure you describe is that of an XDCAM optical disc as exposed
when the U1 drive is operating as a USB mass-storage device, as others have
said. Avid doesn't (or didn't when I last tried) recognise that file
structure as an AMA-capable source.
Once the Sony FAM drivers are installed the folder structure is shown
differently and become recognisable to Media Composer as an XDCAM disc
source.
There's no way I know that an EX camera could create this folder structure -
it used a totally different wrapper to start with, does not create proxy
videos and uses the BPAV structure as you suggest.
So looking at those files I'd assume that they were either recording on an
XDCAM Disc camera, or using something like a PDW-HD1500 deck to record the
output of the camera. One alternative is that the Sony Clipbrowser software,
with an upgrade option, does support transcoding EX material to 50Mbit/s
XDCAM HD (aka XDCAM HD422) and writing it to an XDCAM disc as 50Mbit HD
video.
It's also possible, I suppose, that the Nano recorder they've been using
generates that file structure - I've never used on, I don't know.
In Media Composer 5 you can AMA to arbitrary supported files, regardless of
folder structure (so you could copy all the MXF files out and just link to
them). But this is not an option in MC4 where only supported file structures
are recognised as a valid source.
