oi... this is like saying 'it's Avi' or 'it's QT'...
MXF is a container, can hold a lot of different stuff, so that is not a
guarantee Avid will eat it...
(even more fun, Andreas K. once told me that a dv based MXF renamed to *.mov
played fine in FCP without any MXF stuff installed...)

Actually there are shops - even in LA - that are successfully adopting
all-AMA workflows. This is especially easy with AVC-Intra, because it works
quite smoothly as a native file format in MC5. Plus it's MXF to start with.
Cut until done using AMA and then transcode for color-grading and output.
The key issue is not to move the media locations around from where they were
when you started. That's the same in FCP or Avid.
