Are you talking about Ingex's WriteAvidMXF, or FFMBC? I have definitely made
proper Avid MXF with WriteAvidMXF, but I've been less successful with FFMBC.
Although I may have been using an earlier build.
Nick, WriteAvidMXF is part of the BBC's Ingex project, you'll find it here:

Unless you feel good about compiling from source yourself, you'll probably
want to download one of the binary builds. For OS X you'll be needing the
IntelDarwin or PPCDarwin builds (probably the Intel one)...
