I just always had trouble getting plausible results with a mouse. The slopes would be wrong, too steep in front, to shallow on the back, 12 keyframes where 1 would do, etc. Then you would go through that "filter automation gain," and when you had done that 3 to four times, you would have keyframes that looked rather like what you would have gotten setting them the old-fashioned way, one by one, except that they were less accurate and you would then have to fix them. I really didn't see the point. Admittedly, it's been years since I really tried it, but I doubt I would ever get happy with something quite that exclusively mouse driven. My arm is toast as it is.

Perhaps with some sort of external faders it might feel better? Is there an option for such a thing with Avid?

Huh?! Hairbrained? It works quite well and is very useful. Just like automation

on a hardware console. Also works well in other apps like FCP. It's actual live

mixing, as opposed to rubberbanding or setting per-clip levels and adding

dissolves.
