I'm with Bouke (no 'r') on this - it sounds like the problem with your
mattes is how you are creating them (which means the question may be
one for a Photoshop list, not an Avid one, but never mind). I have
created many titles in Photoshop, both SD and HD, using the text tool
then saving as PNG which looked pristine on small and large monitors.
There is something wrong with either your graphics or the way you are
handling them in Avid.

What are your system specs? What are your project settings? How are
you connected to your monitors? And (probably most importantly) why
are you using the lasso tool in Photoshop on text?
