Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Avid embracing third party hardware?

I disagree (sorry). I don't mean to be pain, but these systems are
solid. You just have to know what you're doing, and it takes a while.
i still miss a step every now and then - with FCP one of the
shortcomings is that when you're outputting to tape, there are various
settings all over the place that you have to get right. Once you get
into the habit of doing this, it's fairly straight-forward and rock
solid. If you don't work with FCP every day, just dabbling in it, or
every once and a while, it IS a case of operator-error. Oh, and Avid
has shortcomings as well, right? right?

Well, I can address this one. We do a ton of various format outputs
to FCP all day long between Digital Service Station and Alpha Dogs, FCP
finishing services. And it IS flakey. When it works, it's fine, but
often you have to play around to get things working correctly.

It's easy to say "operator error" in excusing the shortcomings of
FCPs technology, but it doesn't hold water. The underlying problems
seem to track back to QT which was never intended to be a solid tape
delivery format. The FCP team has done wonders working around it's
shortcomings, but they are still shortcomings.

Let's just agree to disagree here and move on.
