I am trying to figure out what the best quality workflow for Avid is in SD
10bit. I recently got a DX MOJO so now I can capture SDI, Previously I was
using an analog MOJO.
So here is my understanding from what I have read from posts and the net and
doing a little RTFM on the side:
Capture:
Avid's native capture for SD lets say MFX as OMF is so 8 bit is 1:1x (x
being 10bit) then this will capture a 10bit MXF file.
OK good got than much clear. Note this is only for my SD workflow not HD.
Graphics Import:
When I want to export graphics from AE there is some info on this but it
seems a little vague as to the best route. I am looking to find out what the
best is, not what works for you or looks good but what the best is. From a
couple of posts is seems the Avid import engine has some issues dealing with
it's own 10bit codecs. Apparently the 10bit codec "avid packed and the 1:1x"
will not import into avid as a 10bit file but will truncate to 8 bits. Per
this same post the only way to get 10bit files into the pgm is use 16bit
TIFF files or use the DNXHD (10bit) codec. So for a SD workflow the only
option I have is 16bit TIFFs?
Someone please clarify this point.
Color Correction:
Per the posts and manual it seems that Avid is using 12bit color correction?
Obviously if I can capture 10bit video instead of 8bit video this will be
better in the long run. Right?
Is there anything that you need to be aware of when rendering?
There is a HQ setting for rendering CC is this Avid's translation for 12bit?
is the normal setting for 8bits?
Digital Cut:
Layback with the 10bit option. Now if you are using 8bit captured footage
this would make little difference, right?
So when using 8bit footage use 8bit layback and 10bit for 10bit layback?
MC 3.6.something
Z800 = smoking fast
DX MOJO
Layback is to Digibeta
So with that said, if you can fill in the holes that would be great. As a
note is there a reason some Avid geeks don't write a white paper on this
kind of nerdy stuff that we can just read? I mean the manual should have
this info, am I right? Or if not, label it a white paper and only those
super video geeks, nerdy enough can read it. But at least is would be
available.
Maybe someone should start a wiki for Avid..
