I am led to believe that there's no proper SDK for QT, so anytime another vendor tries to work with these codecs, there's a bit of reverse engineering involved. At least on the recording side. This even extends to inside Apple, to some extent. I firmly believe that the reason ProRes exists is because it give the ProApps team a codec for which they can take responsibility outside of the QT team.
Right now, for file-based workflows, Premiere Pro CS5, Vegas Pro or EDIUS seem to be the best low-cost solutions (not counting DS or Smoke-Mac in this) for this mish-mash we currently operate in.
