[Avid-L2] Re: Export to XDCAM file, no drive

It is possible to export an OP1a MXF file from Media Composer.

On Windows place a blank XDCAM HD folder structure on a drive. You can download one here: http://snipr.com/svftj-cwb

Use Link to AMA volume for the empty folder. A bin will open and an error dialog that no clips were found.

Close the bin and delete it.

Select a Sequence or clip and Output > Export to Device > XDCAM

Under Target XDCAM Disk, Select the path for the AMA Volume.

Select the desired Video Format

And OK.

This will create an XDCAM HD OP1a MXF file in the clip folder that can be played by the XDCAM Viewer and imported back into Media Composer. For some odd reason, the audio is distorted with the VX-10 player on Windows, but VLC on Windows and the XDCAM Transfer application on the Mac works.

The clip will have the correct Time code of the sequence or clip.

What this won't do is create a whole XDCAM HD disk, with the Proxy etc. The clip in this folder will not work with AMA.

It will also write over any clip that's added. If C0001 is in the clip folder, and another clip is written to the folder, it will be written over with no prompting.

On A Mac using the Export to Device to an AMA mounted XDCAM folder results in an error that there isn't enough drive space available. If the contents of a blank XDCAM HD disk is copied onto a drive, in my case I used a USB Flash drive. This will mount on the desktop and a bin will automatically open with the dialog that no clips were found. At this point I was able to export to the flash drive.

The other option is to use the Disk Utility and create a read/write disk image. Copy the contents of a blank XDCAM HD disk to it. It will act the same way as a thumb drive. This process has the same limitations as using an XDCAM Folder with Windows. Only the MXF file is written, none of the other work is done; proxy etc.

To create a Disk Image using Disk Utility; Select New Image from the top menu and make sure the Image Format is: read/write disk image. Mount the image and copy the contents of a blank XDCAM HD disk to the image.

Media Composer will automatically see this as an XDCAM HD disk.
