RE: [Avid-L2] Re: Dede Allen interview on Fresh Air tomorrow

My favourite experience of this approach to film editing was on a very
high profile feature at Shepperton studios about ten years ago.

The Editor was an industry legend whose work you will all, I am certain,
have seen.

He used to come in at 9am, settle on the sofa at the back of the edit
suite and read the Daily Telegraph while the 1st busily cut away on the
Avid, and the 2nd, 3rd etc. worked in the adjacent rooms.

At Midday on the dot there would be a massive rustling as he folded the
paper away;

"Rrrrrrright, what have you got for me today?"

He would say as he sat down next to his 1st Assistant.

And then a masterclass in editing would commence.

He had no idea how to use the Avid, but by God could he edit.

At 4 p.m. he would get up, take his paper, and head for the pub.

Every afternoon I spent in that room was an education.

It's not uncommon, even these days. I know at least 2 editors who can
hardly operate the Avid and work with a first assistant who "drives"
it for them. Ok, they're not "young blood", but they're still working.
Their experience of storytelling is more important than their ability
to use an Avid.

Pierre

PS: enjoyed the Dede interview. Is it a cut down version of a longer
one?
