Actually you can output from FCP using an Avid reference movie, but it has to render. I had the situation where I could not export a QT from MC, but I could export a reference QT. I opened that in FCP and after rendering (reasonably fast I might add). Everything was DNXHD. I'll bet if I had one of those magic MXF player plugins (Calibrated{Q} MXF Import) at the time, it would have just played without rendering. Anyway, I was able to export a flattened QT from FCP of an Avid timeline from a reference movie. Avid choked on export. So FCP is good for something in an Avid toolkit. Its a bit more of a Swiss Army knife with codecs; until MC 5 at least.
