[Avid-L2] Xpress DV (don't laugh) audio problem

OK - I've set up a colleague with a copy of Xpress DV 4.6 on his HP/Compaq
NX6310 so he can rough-cut some footage he shot (he's a director, not
editor). Xpress DV installs OK and plays video but not the audio. Hitting
play (or even trying to play lineup tone) results in a kind of squawk/chime
(very short) then silence. The audio card is described as Soundmax HD Audio.
I'm more Mac-savvy than PC. Any ideas? It has Win XP and enough RAM.
