Re: [Avid-L2] Re: NLE of the future (was Avid buys Blue Order)

Hi  Jim,
I'm concentrating on content distribution management software at Signiant (www.signiant.com) and would be happy to answer any questions on WAN acceleration, managed transfers, automation, and security. Some of the topics in discussion the -L are quite achievable. "Editing on the wire", as I refer to editing content without it being resident locally to you as well as using managed file transfers to connect geographically distributed work teams are two areas that will redefine how we work.

Best,
Tom O.

Well, if the system is built with technology and by people who take security

seriously, a cloud system can be OK. For example, my old officemates,

Aspera, makes software that allows high speed file transfer...Way beyond

what you can do with FTP. Used by WETA, Technicolor, NBC, Apple (for content

owners sending their material to the iTunes Store), and so on. So they get

the media space. Their stuff is also used on some cloud computing efforts.

And more significantly for this discussion, their software is used by the US

Department of Defense, the NSA, and so on to transfer super classified

information over open and closed worldwide TCP/IP networks like (the closed)

JWICS and SIPRNET... OK, I¹m getting out my depth here....I¹m not even sure

I got those last two acronyms correct.

Aspera will be at NAB again, I¹m pretty sure:

http://www.asperaso ft.com

The point is, people way more concerned about security than James Cameron

and Steve Jobs move data over TCP/IP. So Avid or someone could build a cloud

system that works for folks like us and isn¹t too risky. ³Could² doesn¹t

equal ³will.² Guess we¹ll see more at NAB...

Jim
