DS works (imports/stores/outputs) as YUV in a YUV project, RGB 4:2:2 or
4:4:4, 10 bit etc, as required in RGB projects. There's no point converting
YUV to RGB just to convert it back again if you're going back out to tape.
This also enables it to preserve SuperWhite or SuperBlack if required.
There are some (including most 3rd party) effects that only work in RGB so
for those effects a conversion is unavoidable.

I had a very similar discussion with an Autocreet technician. We tried to
think of a widely used, computer based post-production tool that was not in
RGB. The only one we could find was Avid MC. I think that the DS works in
RGB, but I'm not sure.
I am trying to put together idiot proof work flows with Flame, Smoke, AE and
Avid. Everything around the Avid is RGB which means that there can be
colormetric errors in the transcode (AE is particularly bad for this)
As for 601 / 709, I have yet to find a graphist who knows whait it means.
