[Avid-L2] Re: OT: ABC news lays of 20 percent of staff

I've freelanced at ABC NEWS for about nine years, and just completed a
two-and-a-half-year gig at the promo department across the lot at
Prospect. I work(ed) union at both gigs, alongside union & non-union
counterparts. The ABC NEWS Los Angeles Bureau at The Prospect Studios
currently uses PC Avid NewsCutters (v6.x, I believe), running Adrenaline
BOBs, networked by Unity ISIS. Media is shared using MediaManager.
Editing is still done at SD resolution(16x9) and upconverted for
broadcast. After two and a half years I lost a full-time, freelance
gig at the promo department in October. When they moved to from
tape-based Avid/LANshare to tape-less FCP I was told there were fewer
rooms and my services wouldn't be needed anymore. Since I left the news
rotation to move to promos I've had to "go to the end of the line" in
the rotation. I've only been able to get a total of 45 hours (nine
eight-hour shifts) of work at the newsroom in 14 weeks. Now the layoffs
are here, and it's clearer than ever that ABC is not the place to be
right now. At this point, and with all due respect to my coleagues &
technical managers, I'd not be suprised to see management in either (or
both) department go to iMovie on iMacs. The promo department already
went from Avid to FCstudio. Why not go all the way? I hope I didn't
just risk getting rehired. --J--

For me that would be Avid. Also what system do they already have in
place in the news world at ABC. I believe net news at the Prospect lot
has an interplay environment. I'd be curious how many unions and guilds
get involved in the hybrid employee.
