[Avid-L2] Re: OT: ABC news lays of 20 percent of staff

Has anyone read the article about the most trusted source of information is now PBS? But even PBS is using 3 in 1s. World focus is a good example of the person, shooting, editing and writing. I have been doing some spot work as a "visual journalist" and it sucks. FOR me, I cannot conduct an interview with a politician if I have to worry about focal length. So more and more, yellowed green visual, shaking ws, poor audio, ends up on "air" and then lets go into web material which is mostly filler.
The rush to put video clips on all websites makes many look like you tube, oh wait, THEY ARE YOU TUBE videos!
Whats a professional to do? I ask this every day, as I write from home, pitch stories via conference call, swllow hard and go out into the field.

Where, exactly, has that VJ approach produced consistently good daily
journalism...or even good ratings?

Seriously...we have a station VJ¹ing here, and at least one O&O station
talking about it. ³We¹ll teach the talent to shoot and edit and the
photographers to voice,² they say (and I paraphrase). The VJ model really
didn¹t work out at KRON, previously one of the best local news b¹casters in
the nation (according to CJR and others)...now not. Sure KRON has other
problems, but seems like they¹re the canary in the coalmine for other
stations and the networks.

Sigh.
