It's really more a function of the Mac letting you know when it's
happy with the setup (at least for the .Mac / .Me account's "Back To
My Mac" functionality).
For direct "internal network" stuff it's pretty basic: SysPrefs >
Sharing, then enable "Screen Sharing", then set additional options via
"Computer Options".
I set this up so long ago I don't really recall the specifics - but it
wasn't terribly involved. This is all on 10.5.x
