[Avid-L2] Re: And when the advertising dollars leave?

3D is an interesting concept. So far Avid has no solution that lets you MASTER a 3D stereo sequence. The 3D in MC is only viable for screening, so I doubt if you'd actually cut with it that way all the time. There is also no finishing path through DS, according to what I've been told by Avid folks.

If you look on the FCP side, you have at least two ways: Tim Dashwood's plug-in and Cineform 3D. Both give you more image control of 3D parameters than MC's feature; but I don't know whether you can generate a DCI-compliant file using these systems. Today, the 3D finishing world is still largely a Quantel and Assimilate game.

I think it's too early to tell if 3D is a current buzz item or a real long-term trend. I saw "Avatar" in 3D and it was awesome (using the REAL3D digital system). I also would NOT want to see too many other films that way. The 3D trailers that preceded the movie were a mixed bag. A live action trailer ("Piranha 3D" - bound to be awful) was VERY annoying in 3D. OTOH, Tim Burton's "Alice In Wonderland" looked like it really lent itself to 3D.

Since the trend in the near future seems to be ESPN and Discovery in 3D, my guess is that these images will go through very little 3D interocular adjustment and basically pass through as a "live" signal. As such, any NLE that can pass the signal technically will be fine, even if you can't monitor a true stereo image. (I'm only guessing, but I think that's going to require a 1080p/60 signal.

In short, I really don't see 3D as the defining technology of whether or not an NLE survives in the marketplace.
