Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Smoke on Mac Update

I had worked on the Irix-based smoke for years and demo'd the Linux version about a year or so ago. If the Mac version is anything like those in terms of speed/performance and toolset (as opposed to a stripped down product with the 'smoke' moniker) then it will beat ANY other finishing system hands down.

Until I was on it every day I didn't even know I had been missing so many elegant and powerful tools for finishing. And once I fully-absorbed them I was able to use them in so many ways I had never predicted. The tracking in particular is key because you can send that data into so many places - specific points of a mask for auto-roto or power windows for color-correcting, for example. The keyer and the DVE are also both incredible. Basically if you're finishing a project and you (or more likely your producer ;)) have a way out idea, or something that went horribly wrong in production and needs to be 'fixed in post', then smoke can most likely handle it.

It was the first time since the advent of non-linear that I worked on a system that closely approximated the pro-mentality of the linear tape rooms. When I learned DS a few years later I saw that DS was close but I still feel like smoke was a better finishing system.

But I have to say until they have Sparks it's going to be a tough sell for me - they're such a big part of the workflow.
