Just to stay up to date I read through the Scarlet postings yesterday
-- and that was exactly my thought. For $5000 you get to join the Red
club composed of those who will show-off their Red to all their
buddies, but never really have the script, lighting, actors, and
editor to finish movie.
But, I then realized that back in `67 I did the same with a Bolex. For
$1,500 I had a "real movie" camera. Of course, I quickly realized I
couldn't afford anything but cheap 3M film -- and I had no way to
record sync sound. So, in fact, my sound Super8 camera was really far
more useful. But, it wasn't a "Bolex."
So today's "kids" are doing the same. Buying a fancy camera and
ignoring everything else. The fact is that nearly ANY camera will give
"film" like results IF you spend the money -- and have the skill -- to
light scenes correctly.
If a company could make a really sexy looking light kit for $5000 --
that would be far more useful for aspiring filmmakers than a $5,000
camera. Or, perhaps Avid should make a $5000 NLE called "Red Composer"
so it could get the PR coverage it needs. Kid's would be willing to
work for $300/week just to get their hands on it. Whoops -- wasn't
that true when Avid's cost $100,000.

Steve Mullen
