[Avid-L2] Re: OT: Grass Valley 110 switcher tally lights

Good grief, Charlie Brown! GVG 110 switcher for $200??? That's just wrong on so many levels! LOL Time marches on and you either keep up or get run over like Grandma by the reindeer.

Thanks to Pete for the ebay link. Unfortunately that's the Operator's Manual which we already have. It teaches you how to do a dissolve or wipe from camera 1 to camera 2, etc. Not quite what I'm looking for. We need the Maintenance Manual which I haven't been able to locate. I did just now take another look at the grassvalley.com web site and decided to take a gander at the .pdf for the Model 110-HD switcher. They have a nice section on hooking up the tally lights and I think I may have discovered my error. On the HD switcher the Chassis Ground is connected to the shield of your tally cable while you use pin 1 for input 1 and then Tally Common for the other lead. I don't remember seeing a pin labeled Tally Common, but the unit is already in the rack and it IS dark back there with a lot of cables in the way. I saw the Chassis Ground and pins 1-8 and jumped to a conclusion that's apparently wrong. I will check it out when I'm there next and see if this new information is enough to get me on the right track.

Thanks for the input. Just talking these things out with someone is often all it takes to get things sorted out.

I know their product line has moved on but these are the guys I use to call at 7:00 pm Sunday night when I'd perhaps overstepped my technical limits and buggered up something and I'd get a call back from some tech who was on call. Has Thompson's reign really F'd up support for legacy equipment. I recall sending in a Thompson Digibeta for warranty service and it took them 6 weeks to get the machine back. It was a Sony with the Thompson moniker. They even wanted us to ship it to Neveda so they would then ship it back to Burbank for repair and back to Neveda and then back to us and we were in Burbank. I think we were able to avoid the shipping nonsence but 6 weeks was really long. Oh well time marches on with the race to the bottom.

I help out a local non-profit with their studio shoots and recently their old Echolab switcher gave up the ghost. Fortunately they received a donation of an old Grass Valley 110 switcher just in time. Unfortunately it came without a manual and I'm having no luck in sorting out how to hook up the tally lights to the Sony camera control units. The Sony's want a contact closure to light up and while I see a group of pins on the back of the Grass Valley labeled Tally I'm not measuring a voltage or a contact closure from any of the pins labeled 1-8 and the pin labeled ground.
