Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Speaking of AMA...

I just did two days of fast turn around AMA editing and I think you're
right John. AMA worked great for what I was doing. I used two Sony U1
drives and MC on a notebook. One drive for XDCam 50 source material and
sent edited sequences to the other U1 as XDCam clips. There were a few
times when I had to consolidate clips to a drive so I could use source
clips from multiple disks. Two days of spitting out 45-60 second
sequences went without any major issues. Export times were a bit slow.
They sped up dramatically if I rendered my effects keeping the total
time to disk about the same if I rendered or not. One oddity I noticed
is that my single track of audio (panned center) insisted on showing up
just on one track of the exported XDCam file. Easy workarounds but it
wasn't necessary for what I was doing. Overall, AMA was a great tool
for the job. I can't imagine using it for a project with numerous
source disks but I don't think that's what Avid had in mind when they
added it. --J.B.

Greater minds suggested it would be better to consolidate to an Avid MediaFile than try to use AMA on such a large scale. Seems like AMA is geared towards quick turn around stuff but falls short on larger projects that still need the robust Avid media database. I'd be curious if that holds true for people really hammering on AMA work flows.
