Picture walking down a city street at night. Up ahead you see an open apartment window. In that room there is a lamp sitting on a desk against the wall at the farthest end of the room form the window.
As you walk down the street, you will see light on the edge of the window frame, and if the air has any particulate matter in it, you will see some of the light reflected off of that. As you get closer, it will get a little brighter. When you are directly across the street, it will be VERY bright as you actually see the lamp itself. Continuing past and craning backwards, the light level will fall off the instant you don't see the light directly anymore.
Now imagine the same scenario, but now the lamp is sitting in the actual window. You see the equal brightness on your entire walk except for any drop off due to distance form source.
The lamp in the back of the room is the LCD technology.
The lamp in the window frame is CRT, OLED, LED, plasma. They are "emissive" technologies as the light "emits" from the front of the screen.
