Insofar as I understand these things the heavy lifting is in the
debayering and decoding of the (relatively) tiny RAW files to full RGB
10, 12 (ideally)or 16bit data and then converting them into the essence
and wrapper of choice. That is what the Clipster and the Red Rocket can
do in silicon. Most everyone else is working in software (slowly) and or
pixel skipping as well as (often) working at shallower than desirable
bit depths AFAIK.

Dunno the latest rumors, but i do know that it won't take long (if not
already) the engine to do so will be free.
Creating native Avid files (including all metadata) already is freely
available (thanks to the BBC),
porting RED files is just a matter of time. If there is no need, don't
invest.
(Rupert should know more, as he is more involved than i am)
