The Betacam Y component signal is a "composite" (monochrome) signal
complete w. H & V sync. Go ahead & try it - you can make a Betacam
recording with only a single BNC cable into the Y input. You can even
feed a composite (NTSC color) signal in to the Y input and the Betacam
deck will lock to the composite sync & record a monochrome version of
the color signal, without needing any external reference.
