That's being generous. ;-)

I think that's all it will be for a while. RED has done a great job of being the world's biggest tease. The Redcine-X demo video was a great way to whet appetites and promote a non-existent software product. It may happen someday, but I think they are much farther away from a product than they'd like customers to believe.
Also remember than part of their roadmap is a hybrid motion/still camera, so some of this software processing will also eventually go to a photo organization/correction app. I don't see Redcine-X or Rocketcine-X as an NLE-wannabe. Instead, I see it as a media organizer, selects assembler and color correction tool that will probably end up being a hybrid of Redcine and Lightroom.

Doesn't appear to be the case with the 25+ cameras in my market. Many owners scrape together a body+accessories package for $30-$50K and then try to rent lenses or use existing still (or other) lenses.

Not first hand, but these are the comments made by many of the developers using the SDK. In other words, Assimilate appears to have direct access to the R3D files, because they were first on the scene. This permits greater performance than companies using the SDK. RED has also been on record as threatening litigation on companies trying to reverse-engineer native access without adhering to the SDK.

I totally agree, but I'm not optimistic. Look at the still photo world. There is a standard and that's Adobe's. Yet every camera manufacturer has their own profile, so every time a new camera comes onto the market you have to have a round of software updates for iPhoto, Adobe, Aperture, etc.

That would be great, but unlikely. I hate to be such a pessimist, but the history so far includes things like AAF and the CDL, neither of which have been universally adopted.

Absolutely. That's far more revolutionary than anything RED has done or will do.
