You'll only see Fast Scrub if you have the DX hardware. It's a setting
in Timeline preferences and it's turned on by default. It makes dragging
through the timeline more responsive and would be way cool and something
Avid ought to trumpet loudly except for a major flaw -- when you have it
turned on, waveforms redraw all the time. Move a video only clip just
one frame in segment mode -- all waveforms redraw. Undo frequently
triggers a complete redraw. And so do all kinds of other routine editing
tasks. Heck, I've even seen the timeline redraw as a result of changing
a clipname in a bin! I leave waveforms on as much as possible an this is
a real work stopper for me.
Unfortunately, turning off Fast Scrub is not a very good solution. In
software-only systems (and in v3 Adrenaline for that matter) draggging
through the timeline is very responsive. Frames are blasted into the
monitor very nicely. Fast Scrub is even better. But if you have the DX
hardware and you turn Fast Scrub off, you do not go back to
software-only level performance. Instead, the timeline behaves the way
it did in Adrenaline 2.8 or so -- slow and unresponsive.
I've sadly turned Fast Scrub off on my Nitris system. There's no really
good solution -- if you like to look at waveforms, software-only (or
Adrenaline) wins at this point.
