invaluable help from the lists over the years so i thought it was to give
back some of my hard earned meridien knowledge. my configuration is an avid
xpress elite 6.05 running on mac os 10.2.6. this is basically a poor man's
mc1000 with two streams of realtime 1:1 and 3d effects.
*
the platform*
although never approved by avid, i have been running the system on a mac
quicksilver dual processor 800mhz g4 for years. it's quicker than the
aproved macs and i have had no issues with it. my system originally had an
expansion box for the pci cards. i gave that up years back and mounted all
the cards inside the mac. i was told not to do this but i am stubborn. i
mounted a radio shack digital thermometer probe inside the box and i have
never had heat related issues.
*enclosure*
i recently moved the g4 components to a marathon powerrack g series
enclosure. this has better air circulation than the original apple enclosure
so i decided to mount the media drives internally. so far, no heat issues
and the system is now rack mounted and quieter.
*hard drives*
i am currently running a pair of maxtor atlas 10k drives. i striped them
with softraid 3.2.1. softraid is compatible with the atto card. i have tried
both the atto oem software that avid supplies and express stripe from avid
over the years but i have found softraid to be better. i rarely get
underruns or missed frames anymore. i also buy all my scsi cabling from
granite digital. they are expensive but the quality is worth it. avid
recommends not using the energy saver preference pane to put hard disks to
sleep and i concur. the default setting is too frequent and the drives will
spin down in the middle of an edit. however, i have found that the terminal
command pmset will allow you to set the disk sleep function at a longer
interval. i set mine to sleep after 30 minutes so that the drives will spin
down after my session is done.
*backup*
i use carbon copy cloner 2 to do automated backups of both my system disk
and my raid. the backup media drives are firewire external drives striped
with softraid.
that's it for now...
