Re: [Avid-L2] Mixing with headphones...

TMcD

My experience with headphone mixing has been sketchy.

Headphones (good ones) give a much clearer image and seperation than
speakers. They will tend to trick you into believing that your voice
mix is balanced but the same mix will sound muddy on most speakers.
Or perhaps music will not be there at all, though you added just the
right amount while wearing the sets. Male vs female voices may not
track the way you expected.

Usually it's voice vs music that's the concern but nat sound levels
can also be undercooked when using the cans.

It would be smart to experiment before the gig with your normal edit
bay to get a sense for the difference. You may find that emphasizing
some of the audio elements is needed.

You can adjust for this in your head or try a global eq preset.

Personally. I would grab a set of speakers from best buy or pack a
small battery operated units like those for iPods for a quick
reference. I use a creative labs unit while backpacking that puts out
very decent sound.

And of course, don't munch on that lousy hotel food while mixing,..
