Re: [Avid-L2] Assistance needed on older Avid project

First some housekeeping…The most current version of v5.5x is 5.5.5, so an update might help.  (That version is still available on the AVID download site.)

Also, here is an article from AVID that describes the need to explicitly install an AVX plugin for that file format, and links for mac and pc to get it:

Some standard things about old AMA linking…

Don't use "auto" setting when linking, explicitly pick the AMA AVCHD plugin.  The auto setting was very dicey in older versions of Media Composer and often blocked functionality.

There are several bug reports about not being able to do some AVC codecs in real time on v5.5x so I suggest if you get the card to link, transcode!

Finally, there may be windows drivers required if you are using a card reader.

Hope this helps…

Friend of mine running MC 5.5.2 on a Windows 7 laptop is having difficulty importing material sourced from his Panasonic AVCCAM. Same setup worked fine last year for a similar project.

Error message that he is getting is along the lines of "this is not the first clip of a spanned clip, if this is a spanned clip it will be out of sync."

Of course - none of these files are spanned.

As a result of this message, he finds himself unable to batch import his material and is having to import one entire week of footage one clip at a time. I suggested that he AMA the files into his system, but he has been unable to do so - I'm guessing because of the age of his system.

[Avid-L2] Scaling DCI 4096_2160 to UHD 3840_2160 Efficiency?

We use to deliver everything 4096_2160 but now only the archive masters will be DCI.  It's easy enough to scale an IMF during creation to UHD Letter Box but now they want a DPX that is also 3840_2160.  I've posted before that the problem with switching the project to UHD is all the paint outs shift vertically off due to the scale to fit in a different aspect ratio.

Last night I took a 19 minute section into Resolve and created a sequence from the DPX 4096_2160 source.  I made the timeline settings UHD and input scaling at scale to fit.  This produced the necessary letterbox.  The export took 3 hours.  The source was from a Graid 20TB drive hooked up USB 3 on a sonnet card in my expansion chassis for my macpro mid 2012 12 core upgraded to 3.46GHz.  It didn't seem to mater if I exported back to the Graid or my internal 4 stripe raid the time estimate was just over 3 hours.  So I figure my typical hour ish show will take 9 plus hours.

The original DPX export from Avid took about 6 hours.  I know Avid is much faster with DPX exports these days but my storage infrastructure isn't super fast hence the 6 hours.  It use to take 9 hours before Avid beefed up DPX performance.

Now I'm thinking I would be better off creating a video mixdown in Avid at 4096_2160 then switch the project to UHD and set the frame flex to scale to fit then export a DPX.  I'm betting that will be faster than trying to scale the original DPX.

Anybody got some secret workflow/mojo that makes more sense.  Well other than production just shooting UHD in the first place.

[Avid-L2] Fw: Avid QT Ref Export confuses Uncompressed 32bit Floating point as Long Gop?

Subject: Avid QT Ref Export confuses Uncompressed 32bit Floating point as Long Gop?

MacPro mid 2010 upgraded to 12Core 3.33GHz, GTx-680, 24GB Ram, Mac OS 10.12.6, MC 2018.12.3
I have a 4K DCI project 4096_2160 Rec 709 typical of all my 4K projects.  Source is Varicam 35 AVC-Intra YUV 10bit transcoded to DNxHRHQX.  I had some help on the project and I found a few clips had been consolidated not transcoded so they were still AVC-Intra.  I deleted that media and relinked the clips to the HQX transcoded media and consolidated with handles.  Everything is fine at that point.

I did my ProResHQ upper track safe color effect as I always do.  When I went to export the QT Reference I got an error saying there was long GOP media and a QT Ref could not be exported.  I displayed reference clips and nothing was AVC-Intra, which isn't long Gop but I thought it might be the odd man out.  The one thing I did see besides HQX media was one matte key .tiff that had been imported as uncompressed 32bit floating point.  I deleted it's media and reimported as HQX.  After doing that I then rerendered the one effected safe color effect to proresHQ.  I was then able to export a QT Reference without issue.

So I don't have time to experiment but I'm curious if Avid was somehow seeing the uncompressed 32bit floating point .tiff that had an alpha channel as long GOP in some sort of weird bug/glitch.  That was the only thing I changed after several attempts getting the error.  I have no idea why that would be the solution.  I didn't restart Avid during this issue so I don't know what else it could be.

Has anyone had any quirky behavior with uncompressed 32 bit floating point DNxHR media.  I have never used it and I don't know why someone imported this way but I assume the intention was to have the highest quality video.  Or could it be another attempt by the Man trying to hold me down!!!  "We don't need your Uncompressed Floating Point!!!  Power to HQX.  Let's support the compressed media revolution."  Oh wait after a weekend on a College campus I fear my radical hippy daze are coming back.  ;-)

Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.
It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share
information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for
professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to
share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no
better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of
informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the
group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users
Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy
Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery
for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at
the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,
Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only. In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true
international scope with over 300 international members. The community
included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate
organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,
as well as and multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated
Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list. The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Yahoo's tools and will remain that way. The integrated archives with both old L and L2 posts came on line recently as well at the University of Illinois. That can be found at http://archives.itg.uiuc.edu/avid/.

Cross-posting to the FCP-L is welcome, tho reply's will not flow back to either list necessarily- check your own email reply preferences. The Final Cut list is found at: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/FinalCutPro-L

Welcome, and Enjoy!

Extras!
