[Avid-L2] Which Macs to go with?

I got a quandary from my Post Producer who is looking to upgrade some of our edit and assistant editor work stations. We have a 4K series coming up and there will be a need for a lot of transcoding of Panasonic 4K, I assume AVC-Intra, to DNX_36 or DNxHR LB 1/4 resolution.

He is looking at used if possible.  Trash cans, 27 inch iMacs, and the new iMac Pros.  My feeling from threads here is the iMac Pro is overpriced, but what isn't in Mac land.  Most of what I've seen the last few years is people running iMacs with a second monitor and something along the line of a T-Tap for offline editing.  For the transcoding I would think a trash can might make more sense for the heavy lifting aspect but I've heard of the thermal throttling and I think I read for Resolve and maybe other software there needs to be a governing of the performance of the GPUs so they don't overheat to the point of creating artifacts.

My recent experience with cheese grater 12 cores was I could transcode in just shy of real time to DNx36 with or without baking in the LUT.  I was surprised baking the LUT didn't add more time.  It has added 3 to 4 times the transcode times when I've done it transcoding to DNxHR HQX.  Perhaps the newer updates to the transcoding have improved speed but I thought that was more in the area of DPX exports.

Would a Mac Mini be under kill?  I don't see too many of them being used in offline but I don't get out all that much these days.

Of course PCs are a better buy but we are a very Mac centric production company so staying Mac makes more sense.

Any experiences or suggestions welcomed.
